THE JOURNEY OF COFFEE
Warehouse 4 × Counter Culture Coffee
Origin
Inspired by a coffee workshop hosted by Counter Culture Coffee, this project explores the journey coffee takes long before it reaches our cup.
What began as an opportunity to learn more about coffee sourcing and processing became the inspiration for a hand-drawn merch design for Warehouse 4. The illustration follows coffee through the many hands and stages behind it—from growing and harvesting to processing, roasting, and brewing.
The project eventually expanded beyond the shirt itself into a visual story combining illustration, design, photography, and film—an ode to the people, craft, and process behind something we experience every day.
Where the Story Began
The idea began at a coffee workshop hosted by Counter Culture Coffee, where I learned more about sourcing, processing methods, flavor development, and the many variables that shape coffee before it ever reaches the brewing stage.
Seeing the complexity behind the process made me want to create something that looked beyond the finished cup and toward the people, places, and work that make it possible.
FROM CURIOSITY TO ILLUSTRATION
I originally attended the Counter Culture workshop to photograph the experience for Warehouse 4, but as I listened, I found myself asking questions and becoming fascinated by the journey coffee takes before it ever reaches our cup.
The more I learned, the more I was struck by how much intention goes into every step of the process. I began seeing the story visually. I remember thinking, “This is incredible. I wish everyone knew this.” Before the workshop was even over, the first ideas for the illustration were already beginning to take shape in my head.
Back in my studio, I began translating what I had learned into a hand-drawn visual journey—following coffee through growing, harvesting, processing, roasting, and brewing.
The Illustration
This illustration is a visual depiction of coffee’s complex journey from seed to cup. Before a coffee tree can even bear fruit, the conditions have to be right—sunlight, moisture, soil, and time all play a role. Once the coffee cherries ripen, they are carefully picked, sorted, washed, processed, and dried before the beans begin the next stage of their journey.
From there, the coffee travels to the roaster, where heat transforms the beans and develops the flavors and aromas we recognize in a finished cup. The roasted coffee is then packaged and sent out into the world.
Eventually, it reaches us. We grind the beans, brew the coffee, and enjoy something that took countless hands, environments, decisions, and processes to create.
Each element of the illustration represents a piece of that journey—bringing the often unseen process behind an everyday cup of coffee into one visual story
